Linux Distributions

The Linux Distribution Archive is a growing collection of media for the installation of Linux on various systems from the past 20 years. Since its formation in the early 1990s, the open source nature of Linux has ensured great variation in the release of distributions, including variations on floppy disk, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and online-only.

This is the Live Evaluation CD of SuSE Linux 8.2, the 32-bit version. The Evaluation version does not allow updating any RPMs, as opposed to  the Professional version, however, there are no packages remaining that could be updated at this point, anyway. It's also not quite what you would imagine a LiveCD to be, as it saves user and configuration data on disk, if there is a partition it can write to (such as FAT32). It will write its files to the first partition it finds.

This is the LiveCD of SUSE Linux 9.1, 32-bit (i386/x86). Just like any other LiveCD, it boots into the OS directly, without needing to install it. It is the first true LiveCD of SUSE Linux to be released (unlike the previous evaluation CDs, which needed to use the computer's hard disk to run).

This is the Personal version of SUSE Linux 9.1, 32-bit (x86/i386). The ISO is for installation on the hard disk. There were two versions of SUSE 9.1 - personal and professional. The only difference is that the personal version fits on a CD, and the professional version fits on a DVD (thus it has more pre-installed packages). Historically, only the personal version was available for download, and the professional version was sold separately.

These are the installation mediums for SUSE Linux 9.2. The FTP DVD ISO file is the main method of installing the operating system, and it is for use on both 64-bit and 32-bit systems. The mini installation one is for installing from the main DVD file, when it's mounted remotely.

This is the LiveDVD of SUSE Linux 9.3, 64-bit (x86_64/amd64). It's like a LiveCD, just doesn't fit on a CD because it has more packages included.
